Dear Parents,

We all feel the weather quickly changing.  Please make sure your children have enough warm layers to keep them toasty and dry for an hour of time outside no matter the weather conditions.

October 22 is one of our most special and long-standing community events at UHS, Empty Bowls.  This is a night for our community to come together and give back to our friends and neighbors in greater Oakland County through Gleaner’s Food Bank. We hope you all will be able to join us.  In exchange for a donation to Gleaner’s Food Bank, you take home a student crafted clay bowl as a reminder for us to consider those in need.

Our children will help to bake bread and prepare a pot of vegetable soup from our school garden. We are also still looking for a few families to bring a large pot of soup or a loaf of bread to share.  If you would like to contribute to the evening please let Terry know at terry.gardner@uplandhills.org or by phone (248) 693-2878.

School *Masquerade* Dance – October 18, 6:30pm-9:00pm

The upcoming Masquerade themed dance party offers students a chance to “dress up” for a school dance without the thrill to scare. Please do not wear Halloween costumes to this Friday’s school dance.  Also very important, students must be accompanied by an adult to the dance and that adult is responsible for them throughout the duration of the dance. Please do not drop them off.

Families are asked to please consider a $5 donation per student to cover the cost of the DJ.

The dance committee would appreciate any healthy contributions to the snack table. Please drop your contribution off in the kitchen the evening of the dance.

The Dance Committee is accepting donations for Orion/Oxford FISH, a local food bank.

School lunch credits

If you recently signed your child up for school lunch and they had a field trip that day you are eligible for a school lunch coupon.  Please stop by and see Rob for yours????

Lost and Found

The weather fluxuations lends itself to a growing number of articles of clothing left behind at school. Please take a moment to browse the Lost and Found located in the cabinet on the front porch of the school.

UHS Ski and Snowboard Club

Ski/Snowboarding Club season is almost upon us!  We ski and snowboard at Pike Knob on Fridays after school. If you are interested in joining the UHS Ski/Snowboard Club please come to an informational and membership sign-up meeting on Thursday, October 24th at 3:30 in the UHS Welcome/Big Room (Membership fees are $20 per person.)  No worries if you can’t make it to the meeting for you can sign-up for the membership throughout the season.  Also please visit our Facebook page at: Upland Hills Ski & Snowboard Club (friend request Kathryn Szurpicki Hill).  Volunteer parent sponsors for the Club are:  Kathryn Hill (586) 216-5330 and Maureen Adelsperger (269) 779-7609

Plastic Film Recycling

When the green marches were happening in September, and children were leaving schools to participate, Rob said, “We are a school that you march to, not away from.”  Rob is right! For almost 50 years, Upland Hills School has endeavored to be ever moving to a deeper shade of green. This is our latest step and we need your help. We have begun collecting the plastic film from ziploc bags, snack packaging, saran wrap, etc. that comes to school.  Our plan is to get that film to stores that have placed special recycling boxes for the collection of this plastic. These stores include Target, Kroger, Fresh Thyme, Whole Foods, Walmart, and Meijer. The boxes are typically at the front of the stores near the entrance doors or check-outs.  Please sign up today to take some of this plastic for recycling. All you have to do is collect the plastic from the hamper in the Big Room, take it to a participating store, and put it in the box. It will keep the plastic that we, as a community, have generated from entering a landfill and it will raise our consciousness regarding how much plastic we are responsible for.  Go Green, UHS! Go DEEP Green!
