Weekly Notes

September 20, 2019

Hello Parents,

We hope you are settling in to all the rhythms of a new school year.  We have so much to look forward to this year and so much already happening.  Have you been in to try breakfast from our Nourish Kitchen? Chefs Cass and Jason come from incredible backgrounds at Cacao Tree and Greenspace and are here at UHS using fresh, organic and local ingredients. Many of the vegetables they’re using come right out of our CSA where your children have planted and harvested potatoes, onions and more. If you check their Instagram in the morning, you’ll see what is being prepped for breakfast and can comment on the photo to let them know you’d like to order and pick up when you come to school!

Follow them on Instagram: @nourishuplandhillskitchen

Harvest Store is Open!

Located in the middle entryway of the school, Harvest Store is a student run market selling organic vegetables from the garden. Stop by anytime to get your fresh, local veggies!

Currently for sale:

UPCOMING EVENTS

UHS Picture Day -Thursday, October 3rd

Next time you see UHS parent, Chris Belli say, “Cheese!” and “Thank you!” for offering his professional photography service to the school. A link to place school picture orders will be sent prior to picture day.

Literacy Night – Monday October 7th, 7 – 8.30pm.

Melissa and Robert will offer an evening focusing on how children learn to read and how you can support your child at home.  Parents with children in the early stages of learning to read, or with younger children who will be reaching that stage in the not-too-distant future, are welcome to join us in the Big Room for a fun, informative evening.  (Sorry, no child care will be available).

Hope you can make it!

Please let Robert or Melissa  know ahead of time if you’re coming or not.  It’s very helpful to know how many copies to make, snacks to provide, etc.

Empty Bowls – Gleaner’s Food Bank Fundraiser

This year marks the 28th Empty Bowls event for Upland Hills School.  Join us on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 for a simple meal of soup and bread and help fight hunger.  We hope you will join us for this long standing and very special community evening at UHS.  In exchange for a donation to Gleaner’s Food Bank you take home a clay bowl as a token to remind us to consider those in need.

Our children will help to bake bread and prepare a pot of vegetable soup from our school gardens. If you would like to contribute to the evening with a pot of vegetarian soup or a loaf of bread, please let us know.  RSVP by email terry.gardner@uplandhills.org or by phone (248) 693-2878 in order to determine food quantities.

Tillson Street in Romeo

Volunteers needed on Tuesday, October 29th and Wednesday, October 30th from 6-10pm.

Upland Hills School has been gifted two nights of parking revenue from Pradko Gallagher and Slanec Family Dentistry in Romeo.  People flock to Romeo’s “haunted” Tillson street in October. We are looking for a few volunteers to be parking attendants on Tuesday, Oct. 29th and Wednesday, Oct. 30th.  It will be a fun evening and a great school fundraiser all in one! Let us know if you are available to share a shift. Please contact Terry Gardner at terry.gardner@uplandhills.org
